Speedy Duckweed Harvest- 600 lbs in 4 minutes
September 18, 2013
Disclaimer: This doesn’t count the five minutes it takes to corral the duckweed itself. This is just the “getting it out of the water and up on dry land” step. My record before was twenty minutes for this amount of duckweed.
I fabricated a new harvesting tool that really rakes the duckweed into the manifold of my pumping system fast. That and the new manifold I modded from AC ventilation pieces makes for a hands-free harvesting intake. It’s not pretty but all I care about is productivity at this stage.
Now… to get that conveyor belt fixed and get my washing station in operation before the season is over. Washing duckweed by hand is about as fun as it sounds.

Idea: I have seen a large aquaponics setup used a washing machine to clean the lettuce. Perhaps, you could put the duckweed in paint strainer bags and get a used washing machine and clean it that way. Just an idea.

Actually, I have been doing that this summer! Great minds think alike. Thanks.
