Duckweed Bioprospecting Webinar Update
Heads up on my free webinar this coming Friday, June 7 at 11:00am Central time: “Methods for Duckweed Bioprospecting.” You can register here.
My brother, Mark, asked me some time ago what bioprospecting means. He’d gotten as far as “life prospecting” and was stumped. I picked up the term a few years ago from algae researchers in Florida. It simply means “valuable plant hunting”- in this case, duckweed hunting. If you don’t have any duckweed and really wish you did, you’ve got a few options these days; buy some on eBay, order some from Rutgers University’s Duckweed Coop program, ask one of our ILA members for some, or take the initiative and go on a hunt for some in your area. There are lots of good reasons for going local and it’s all good fun.
I’ll discuss how to go about finding duckweed in your area without even leaving your laptop. Then I’ll talk about actual preparations before you even collect your first sample to the bag it/tag it/get it home safe/and release into its new home. Will probably throw in a couple of neat stories from our ILA members on their experiences bioprospecting as well. Once again, here is the registration link. Space is limited. Hope to see you then!
