Duckweed Heroes of the Planet

October 10, 2012

I’m starting a Duckweed Heroes page and am opening the floor to nominees. If you’d like to nominate someone, here is my initial criteria for the honor:

A Duckweed Hero…

1. Must have unwavering determination in developing duckweed production, despite the odds.

2. Must be a visionary in sustainable aquatic agriculture and actually have produced duckweed for a specific end use of  feed, fuel, food, or fertilizer.

3. Are generous with their hard-won knowledge.

So far, I’m nominating the following people. Send me your nominees and I’ll add them to the list:

Andrew Salzer- Thailand farmer who successfully raised tens of thousands of ducks on  thirteen tons of fresh duckweed he produced daily.

Paul Skillicorn- Bangladesh/US Developed a municipal wastewater remediation system using duckweed to produce fish and pure clean water- first of its kind in the world.

Hamdi Shaar- Lebanese researcher who traveled the length and breadth of his country to find duckweed samples and is the first person in Lebanon to successfully grow duckweed for animal and fish feed.

Who am I missing?

Hamdi, can you supply a one or two sentence description of why they are heroes? I should have asked that in my post. Thanks!
