Dried Apples- Prius Style

August 20, 2012

Remember that apple orchard I was given freedom to pick from at will? It’s been a busy weekend of cranking out applesauce, apple butter, apple leather, and dried apples. Of course, the dried apples get eaten about as fast I dehydrate them. The kids are having a field day.

“You mean I can eat all the dried apples I want? All the applesauce I want?” They are like kids turned loose in a chocolate factory. At first, they are tentative and worried about touching anything. Now, I see them scoop up huge bowlfuls of applesauce and grab handfuls of dried apples and actually USE THE DRIED APPLES AS SPOONS. Talk about gluttony. Love it. They’ll remember this for the rest of their lives.

Thanks to the idea from a good friend, Sue Monroe, I’m commissioning my Prius as a solar dryer. I use window screens and prop up  apple slices in the front dash. I keep the windows rolled down a couple of inches for ventilation. I tried flattening down my back seats and using that area as well, but think it works better where the sun is most concentrated- in my case, the front window. It smells like apple heaven in the car. When I need to run to town, I layer my screens in the back trunk, covered on top and bottom with a clean sheet. Then I pull them out when I get home and resume drying.

Also, am cooking down apple butter in my solar oven. It’s not a lot- only five or six cups, but even a smidgen of a taste runs riot with your taste buds . I found that if I boil down fresh apple juice separately, it makes the final cook down faster and easier.

I have lots of skinny apple peels from my hand-cranked apple corer machine. My grandmother used to dry them and we’d eat them like candy as kids. Now, I first give them a soak in ascorbic acid solution, then toss them with a little of my evaporated apple juice. Wow. The flavor rocks. Am drying them in my solar Sport oven. (I leave both solar ovens open a bit to vent the water vapor off.)  BTW, free kittens!!!

So, is the Prius method working okay? I haven’t gotten my old junker back from the “Strip Joint” yet. If he waits much later, I’ll have to wait for next year for results. Men: Can’t depend on ’em, can’t kill ’em.

And drying duckweed — any tips or thoughts on that? Uses? Holding ability when dry? Have you tried cooking it? “It’s parsley, Honey, dig in!”

WOW so creative! I have a Fuji Apple tree that’s loaded with more apples than we can use if you need some more. LOL!

Hi Wendi, let me get these done up and I might take you up on that. I don’t have any Fuji. Imagine the flavor!
