Sourcing Starter Duckweed
February 24, 2012
When searching for a duckweed starter…
You have four options; sourcing it locally from friends or friends of friends, from urban/rural ponds, purchase it from local aquarium shops, or as a last resort, buy it online. I always encourage folks to source their duckweed locally instead of from the Internet for a couple of reasons.
1. Local duckweed species are adapted to your climatic conditions and are more robust.
2. Should you import a species that is new to your area, you are opening the door for a possible environmental changes in nearby ponds or lakes. It’s always better to err on the side of caution.
In my next post, I’ll describe a novel way to identify the most likely places to find duckweed in the wild. See “Bioprospecting for Duckweed.”
